How are Heat Pumps installed?

What you need to know: Air Source Heat Pumps Installation

Understanding how your new Air Source Heat Pump is fitted

Replacing your current boiler

Typically, an Air Source Heat Pump installation is generally no more trouble than you would expect if you were replacing your current boiler.

Heat Pumps are designed as 'Plug and play' sealed units – in other words the installation of your Air Source Heat Pump is simple and easy for a trained AOS Heating technician. As the name suggests as they only require water and a single phase power supply these can be plugged into a system relatively easily.

Once your Air Source Heat Pump installation has been completed these function as a replacement to the more traditional and less energy efficient gas boiler or electrical heating systems.

How do Air Source Heat Pumps work after installation?

Simply put Air Source Heat Pumps work rather like a typical refrigerator does but in reverse. A fridge (or freezer) extracts the heat from inside itself by means of a refrigerant gas - this heat is then vented into the air. By extracting the heat the inside grows colder.

Air Source Heat Pumps work in reverse to this:

  1. A refrigerant liquid is held in the Evaporator which is exposed to the outside air. Because it is so cold it absorbs heat from the ambient air temperature down to around minus 15°.
  2. As this cold liquid heats up it evaporates and moves to a Compressor – this further increases the temperature and pressure of the gas.
  3. The hot gas moves into a condenser where heat is given off to run your hot water and heating as the gas condenses back into a liquid.
  4. Finally the liquid is pumped back into the exterior Evaporator for the whole process to be repeated.

If you currently have radiators to heat your house you may find that following the Air Source Heat Pumps Installation these do not get as hot as you are used to – this is quite normal as the radiators will operate all the time, rather than in fixed bursts, to heat your house effectively 24/7.

Air Source Heat Pump Installation works very well if your house currently uses underfloor heating as this operates at a much lower temperature and so is far more efficient at heating a room than a traditional radiator.
