Air Source Heat Pump – Savings in cost & carbon
Examining the economic and environmental benefits of Ecodan™ heat pumps
Air Source Heat Pumps vs. Traditional Boilers
Even the most modern, efficient traditional gas boilers do not operate at 100% efficiency – 1 kilowatt (kW) of energy will always produce less than 1kW of heat. However, Air Source Heat Pumps provide outstanding amounts of efficiency and therefore savings to your fuel bills.
Typically 1 kW of energy put into an Ecodan™ Heat Pump will produce on average 3.3 kW of heat – That makes it over three times more efficient than even the very best gas boiler!
Inverter technology – Getting more for less!
The Ecodan™ Air Source Heat Pumps from Mitsubishi has a unique Inverter-control which regulates the whole heating system – this means that, unlike traditional boilers, it will only ever use the exact amount of energy it needs – no more, no less. So you can be assured that your heating system is running at maximum efficiency (and generating maximum savings) all the time.
Better efficiency means lower energy bills
Opting for an Air Source Heat Pump, in place of a traditional gas, LPG or oil boiler, is far more efficient in terms of energy cost – even more so if you are currently using an electricity only system to heat your house and hot water. The savings that can be achieved through the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump are illustrated in the graph below:
Running costs for various heating systems
Prices in the above running cost graph are based on BG standard tariff gas and electricity prices as of June 2009. Oil price based on figures from www.boilerjuice.com June 2009.
From the high energy costs of July 2008 as illustrated in grey, current prices have reduced as indicated. However informed opinion indicates energy prices will continue to rise on average.
Air Source Heat Pumps - Practical Savings with no loss of performance
A good example is a typical Hertfordshire, 3 bedroom home which was involved in a case study carried out over the winter of 2010-11. This newly built property, home to a family with a new baby, had the smallest Air Source Heat Pump installed: an Ecodan™ 5W.
During one of the coldest winters in decades this unit successfully supplied all the heating and hot water required – day or night.
